Why risk damaging the render when there’s no need to drill into it at all?
Cracking or damage can occur because drilling creates stress on the integrity of the render when it is physically disturbed.
The vibrations from drilling can compromise the bond between the render and the substrate, potentially causing it to blow or create small stress fractures around the hole, which may expand over time. This is particularly likely if water manages to infiltrate behind the system and the winter frost causes the water to expand due to freeze-thaw, turning the fractures into cracks.
Drill before, instead of after – it’s that simple!

Lime bloom - it’s harmless, but it’s ugly!
Lime bloom can cause a noticeable change in colour or fading on cement-based materials. This effect is not a fault with the product but can occur when any cementitious materials are exposed to certain environmental conditions during the curing process.
A common cause of lime bloom may develop because the substrate has been saturated after being exposed to damp conditions before applying the render.
While it may not look aesthetically pleasing, the thin layer of lime that surfaces does not compromise the integrity of the system.
To help mitigate this, install drainage systems earlier in the build and use The Render Spacer® to fix fittings directly onto the substrate post-application. This will ensure the substrate is better-prepared and kept dry beforehand, whilst also providing immediate protection to the render post-application where the first 24 hours of the curing stage is crucial for the long-term strength.
